These are the assignments to be completed by 7th grade students during the 4th quarter of the 2012-2013 school year. When updating their ePortfolio sites, students need to make sure that their writing is interesting to read and appropriate for their grade level. All grammar and spelling should be correct and should be at least four sentences in length, unless told otherwise. Many of these assignments could be completed at home, if needed. Student will need Internet access and may need access to the programs listed below in order to complete the assignments.
In order to transfer completed work between home and school, the student would need access to the Internet and would need to log in to Edmodo and upload files to their library. Files uploaded to the student's library could then be downloaded to their computer at school and turned in for grading.
Paraphrase Craze
Click the pink arrows or scroll down to go to the next page. The pink arrow for next does not work on the section with " This is Poe's original passage. Let's see what Perry does with it. "; just scroll down.
Login to Google Drive and go to your 2012-13 Public Folder. Create a new MLA Formatted document. Set the document title (not the title of the actual writing but the title you see in your document list) to 7th-YourFirstName-Paraphrasing. The title on your document should be Paraphrasing Practice. Can't remember how to format in MLA? Check out the instructions under Resources Needed.
Make sure you add a correct IN-TEXT citation to your paragraph. The citation example on the Paraphrasing Exercises is not correct but it does have the Author and Page Number information you will need. Do NOT use the Works Cited examples.
What grade should you get on your paraphrasing practice? You tell me! Your grade will be based on both my judgement of your work using the rubric and your judgement of your work. Use the rubric provided and grade your work. If the rubric leads you to believe that something is missing or wrong on what you have done, fix it and then give yourself a grade!
Open the Paraphrasing Rubric that I have shared with you in Google Drive.
Use File / Make a Copy to create your own copy of this document naming it 7th-YourFirstName-Paraphrasing Grade
Move this document into your 2012-13 folder (NOT your Public folder) and make sure it is shared with me.
Fill out the Rubric for your paraphrasing work. You will need to go to look at your Paraphrasing document in order to grade your work.
The first part of the post should talk about the Adina's Deck video, the Plagiarism Game & Paraphrase Craze activities and the Paraphrasing Practice assignment including a link to the Paraphrasing Exercises. Don't forget to mention that you used Google Docs and MLA Formatting when completing the Paraphrasing Practice assignment. There should be text links to anything that I have linked in this explanation; my links are text links. Writing about what you did in all of these activities will require more than a few sentences!
Embed your Paraphrasing Practice document using Insert/Document.
After your document, add a reflection on all of what you have done in the Computer Lab with plagiarism and paraphrasing.
How did you feel about these activities? Why do you feel this way? This should be specific to this assignment. If I could post what you say on any assignment, it's not specific enough.
What have you learned? Once again, be specific!
What have you done well on these assignments? What do you think you could improve? Be specific.
How to Turn In: Turn in a link to the post on your Google Site on Edmodo.
Can this be completed at home? If you have access to the Internet at home, this assignment can be completed at home.
Top of 1st page contains: Name of Student, Name of Teacher, Name of Class, Date in DD Month YYYY format and Title of the Report centered under these four lines.
Paragraphs indent by 1/2".
Plagiarism & Paraphrasing Story Builder
Group Work:
One member of each group should create a new document in their 2012-13 folder (not the public folder) and name it 7th-Names of Group Members-Story Builder. This document should then be shared for editing with each of the group members and with Mrs. Sedgwick (vsedgwick@stmartinsschool.org).
Group members will write a story about Plagiarism and/or Paraphrasing using 2-3 characters (one character for each member of the group) writing a document together.
All members of the group should contribute the content for their character and the content should be somewhat equal in length.
All members should jointly decide on a title for their story.
Each group member should name their own character and should not use the names of any St. Martin's Middle School student.
Gone Google Stories are limited to 10 total different interactions.
One member of the group will go to the Gone Google Story Builder and begin the story. All group members should type (or copy and paste) in their own content.
All members of the group should jointly pick the music that will be used (if any) and this should enhance the story line.
The creator's name should be your first names - for example, John and Joe OR Debbie, Alice, and Mary.
Once, your group has created your story in the Story Builder, paste the URL for the story into your Google Document.
Individual Work:
Student should add a post to their Google Site in the 4th Quarter:
The post should be titled Plagiarism and Paraphrasing Story Builder
The description of the assignment should include how the script was written and how the Story was actually built.
The student should also include a link to their completed story by:
Going to the URL that was pasted into the Story Building Google Document and playing the Story Builder movie to a point they wish to capture.
Taking a screen shot of their story in progress on the Story Builder site. Hint: Print Screen button on the keyboard.
Using Irfanview (Hint: It's on the desktop) to crop their screen shot to just the story title and story in progress.
Using Edit/Paste to paste the screen shot into Irfanview
Using the selection tool to select the area they wish to keep
Using Edit/Crop to crop to the portion selected
Using File / Save Picture As to save their image in their folder as a PNG file named 7th-FirstName-StoryBuilder
Using Insert/Image to add the image to their post
Using the link option to change the link on the image to the URL for their story
The student's reflection should include:
How they felt about the assignment and how they liked (or didn't like) working in a group for this assignment AND why they felt this way. This should be specific to this assignment. If this could be posted on any assignment they have completed, it is not specific enough.
What they learned doing this assignment. Be specific!
What they feel they did well on the assignment and where they feel they could improve. Once again, be specific!

Student will complete the Customize Your Ride portion of Drive of Your Life
Student should take their time with this & really think about your answers to the questions!
Remember there are no right or wrong answers. This is about what they like.
Student will add a paragraph to the Drive of Your Life post on their Google Site answering the following:
What is their 3 Letter Personal Style Code and what does it mean?
In what ways do they agree with their Personal Style Code?
In what ways do they disagree with their Personal Style Code?
Day 2:
Student will sign in to Drive of Your Life and complete Plan Your Trip
(select Student and enter Username & Password and Login)
Student should take their time and read the descriptions of the jobs and add ones that they think sound interesting. Student should remember:
These don't have to be things they've always thought they would do.
The more jobs they choose to explore, the more chances they will have to earn Drive of Your Life cash and further customize their car.
Student must select at least 5 jobs (but can select more) and add them to the list of jobs to explore on their drive.
At least 3 of the jobs MUST require some kind of education beyond high school.
At least 2 of the jobs MUST require at least 4 years beyond high school.
Use the Search for Other Careers option to find at least one job that is not on your list to add.
Student can check here for education required about all jobs on the Drive of Your Life game.
Student will add a paragraph to their Drive of Your Life post on their Google Site listing the jobs that they are going to explore and the education required for them. NOTE: Student might want to do this as they are selecting jobs rather than waiting until the end. Student should also answer the following questions:
Did any of the jobs suggested for them surprise them? Which one(s) and why? Student should remember these were suggested based on their answers in Customize Your Ride.
Do they think there are any common skills in the jobs that were suggested for them? If so, what do they think they are?
Were there any jobs that they expected to be in their list of suggestions that weren't? Why did they think they would be there?
Do NOT continue with Jump In And Drive!
Day 3 & Beyond:
Student will sign in to Drive of Your Life (select Student and then enter your Username & Password and Login) & then Jump In & Drive
Student should make sure to review the information for each destination. Do NOT just pop in and out of those. Student should take their time and learn what each career is really like.
Student should save the careers they would be most interested in possibly pursuing - student must save at least 2 careers.
Student should take a screen shot of their license at the end of Drive of Your Life (use Print Screen button on keyboard) and crop it to just the license using Irfanview and save it in their folder as 7th-Name-DOL.
Student should select the two careers that now most interest them and add to their Drive of Your Life post about these careers. Include the information listed below. Can't remember the information? Check the Drive of Your Life Career Search .
Name of Career
Education Required
What High School courses would help with this career
Income: Can put the amount from Drive of Your Life but make sure to note that it's from Indiana. Student can also go to Salary Wizard at Salary.com and search for their career choice in Los Angeles, CA and put the median income in Los Angeles.
What skills are important for this career
What would a typical day in this career be like
If this was not the career they originally chose in their Drive of Your Life post, why do they now think they would like to pursue this career?
If this was the career (or one of the careers) they originally talked about in their Drive of Your Life post, were there any things that surprised them about this career when they looked at it in more detail? If so, what and why?
Student will add the image of their license from Drive of Your Life to their post using the Insert / Image option.
